The OkCupid Algorithm is Screwed Up…
So, I’m looking at the “compared to others” section at the bottom of my profile. Apparently OkCupid has a lot of insight into my personalty. This is probably because I have answered too many of their damn questions. I have to admit, that generally I agree with their conclusions. I am more mathematical and scientific than most people. I’m also more introverted. I don’t know if I am better mannered. I would lean towards “no”, but then again the standard probably isn’t too high. I am more independant than average (at least for a girl). I’m probably more ambitious than average (especially for a girl).
Then I see that it says I’m less thrifty . WTF? That definately doesn’t describe me. My boss in my previous job said I was the cheapest person he knew. I was driving a 1979 volvo at that I bought for $750 dollars. I was living in an 300 square foot apartment that had a room I referred to as “the bitchen” (1/2 bathroom, 1/2 kitchen). It was tiled, and along the right side, were my stove and refrigerator and sink. Right in the middle was a shower stall. Inside the shower stall was a toilet: ‘Bitchen’. I moved to Rochester where cost of living is substantially less. I now drive a 10 year old car (instead of a 28 year old one). I live in a 1000 square foot home with a separate bathroom and kitchen.
But DAMN IT ALL, I’m not less thrifty than normal. I got my house with a 15 year mortgage – not a standard 30 year one. I put 17% of my income into my 401k (technically my 403b). I’m not LESS THRIFTY than normal.
The only money related questions on OkCupid are things like “If you had to choose, would you pick 1,000,000 dollars or world peace”. And seriously, do you HOW MUCH world peace is worth? Of course I picked world peace. That doesn’t make me less thrifty than normal. That has nothing to do with being thrifty.
And they gave me the MAXIMUM (3 bars) of un-thrifiness. I just don’t get it. Who makes these damn algorithms?
